MHS&Sheldonian
Portico

The oldest purpose-built public museum in Britain stands opposite Trinity College and Blackwells Book Shop, across the width of the Broad, its magnificently self-important steps and portico rising four-square facing Wren's ornate Sheldonian Theatre.

Originally built to house the Ashmolean collection, it is now the Museum of the History of Science, and holds a mixture of varnished wood, glass cases, brass instruments and radiators that reminds me of the old science labs at school. On weekdays it is a wonderfully sleepy place, and it is rare in my experience to meet other visitors.
